There’s something awesome, almost sacred about stepping into a building that isn’t finished yet. No carpet, drywall not completed, just beams and studs rising toward heaven. It looks raw, but it also feels alive with possibility. Friday night, as we walked into new church building that is construction, we didn’t just see a shell of a building—we saw the future…and we talked about how we believe that this building is not going to be able to contain it!
The pastor gave us all the opportunity to write on the walls bare, we picked up Sharpies and let scripture flow across them.
Verses of promise, strength, and hope.
Words spoken by women of faith — Mary’s adoration, Ruth’s loyalty, Esther’s courage. Bold declarations from the Lord, reminders from the prophets, even whispers of songs from the Psalms.
Where paint and dry wall will cover our writings, God’s Word will remain and as the pastor stated, may they breathe life and come alive in the church. Hidden but profoundly present and speaking. And though no one will see the words written, we believe they will breathe life into every moment lived inside these walls.
Because the Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). It doesn’t need to be seen to be powerful.
It is humbling to know that the walls will one day echo with worship, laughter, prayers, and tears. Babies will be dedicated here. Marriages will be blessed here. People in grief will be comforted and strengthened and blessed with a renewed joy.
As I’m recounting the experience I can’t help but think: what scriptures would you tuck into your walls, your home, your heart?
